[ The sudden shift in tone only makes Lottie feel worse, like he's tending to something fragile. Like she's one wrong comment away from dipping and— he wouldn't be wrong. Because now he has her thinking, and nothing good happens when she thinks.

There's a long silence, her brain preoccupied before she remembers he is trying. Sort of. Saying they are charming in their own way is only marginally better than implying they are blackmailing her, in her eyes. ]

We met at the festival first. It turns out that we'd been hitting on the same girl. A bit like it's with you, yeah? And before the blizzard I found him in the bath house, throwing up.

That's a good way to get to know someone.

[ Lottie knows — she definitely wishes she didn't, because ignorance is bliss or something. People in town gossip and Lottie is a Gossip Girl™, she has to know the drama. But she's not about to go that deep with Felipe, after all she can barely remember his name. She's still a little upset at him. And it's been fun, this back and forth, when it hasn't teetered further than the surface. ]
